What is a Luxating Patella?

A luxating patella is a kneecap that "pops out" or moves out of its normal location, typically because the groove it sits in is too shallow, and the patellar ligament attaches incorrectly. You may notice a skip in your pet's step or see them run on three legs and then back on all four as if nothing happened.

This condition is particularly common in small dog breeds that are genetically predisposed to it. Cats can also be affected by this disease.

There are four grades of this condition. Pets with grades 3 or 4, or grade 2 pets that experience symptoms regularly, may be candidates for surgical repair. Some pets can tolerate this condition for many years; however, as they age, arthritis develops, leading to decreased mobility and joint pain. Once arthritis develops, it cannot be reversed. Additionally, patellar luxation predisposes the knee to other injuries, particularly cruciate ligament injuries.

Our experienced Board-Certified Surgeon can come to our hospital for your convenience to perform this corrective procedure. Your trusted Canyon Falls team will be there to guide you through the post-operative recovery period every step of the way.
